Meet Three of Our Volunteer Physician Heroes
“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” ― Anne Frank
Dr. John Gillen
What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned from volunteering at The CEI Foundation Free Vision Clinics?
It is very rewarding, actually fun, caring for people who have little financial means and may have recently come to The United States, and are in need of CEIF services.
Is there a particular moment that stands out for you?
A standout moment for me was when a patient returned to clinic to give me 2 of his paintings (he is an artist) in gratitude for examining him and referring him for successful cataract surgery.
What do you wish others knew about The CEI Foundation’s Free Vision Clinics?
I hope and wish that people realize that the doctors donate their time and talent, and the technicians and other personnel are putting forth a lot of effort to provide a very valuable service, in expensive facilities that have been provided by CEIF, not the government.
With so many great organizations to support, why should people choose to support The CEI Foundation and its Free Vision Clinics?
Support for the CEIF clinics should be forthcoming because of concern for the patients, who would otherwise not receive this care, and because of a lack of funding from other sources. CEIF clinics are the only providers of free ophthalmologic care in the Tri-State area.
What’s one thing most people don't know about you?
What most people don't know about me is that I am a very good golfer and that I lie a lot!
Dr. David Brounley
Why do you volunteer at The CEI Free Vision Clinics?
When I retired, I realized that what I really missed, and wanted, was the patient contact. Another major reason is that there are many people with significant vision problems that need care.
What do you wish others knew about The CEI Foundation’s Free Vision Clinics?
You can't hold a clinic without an ophthalmologist present. We are really needed. And these clinics are vital [for detecting serious vision issues while they can be treated]. We are able to refer these patients to UC Health's eye program for free treatment.
What would you say to others thinking about volunteering?
If you miss patients and want to continue providing care on a limited basis, join us.
What’s one thing most people don't know about you?
I enjoy oil painting.
Dr. Richard Kerstine
What is the most surprising thing you’ve learned from volunteering at The CEI Foundation Free Vision Clinics?
The most surprising thing I learned at the clinics was the vast numbers of patients who are in need of our services. If we had the personnel, we could open clinics all over town and benefit more people.
What do you wish others knew about The CEI Foundation’s Free Vision Clinics?
We do not boast or advertise or seek recognition for our clinics. The Business Courier many years ago awarded recognition to the Foundation for its clinics. I guess I would want others to know what a great organization we have, with devoted staff.
What’s one thing most people don't know about you?
Something many do not know about me is that I served 16 years on the Council of Amberley Village, the last 4 years as its Mayor.
Inspired? You can help!
Volunteers of all ages and skills are needed at our free vision clinics. If you have just 4 hours a month, you can make a tremendous difference!
We are looking for:
· Front Desk Staff – to check patients in, take blood pressure, help patients complete paperwork
· Nurses and Ophthalmology Technicians – to help check vision
· Optometrists and Ophthalmologists
Students are also welcome who want to explore the field of optometry or ophthalmology by shadowing one of our physicians and volunteering.
